Liz Cardinal, Founder & Owner
Liz grew up in rural Florida, eating tropical fruit off the trees in her family’s yard and neighbors’ fields. Eating ‘in season’ and participating in the local food system was just how she rolled. Always the adventurer, she attended college in Colorado and Ohio before settling for 12 years in Portland, Oregon where she received her Masters degree in Science Education. In the Pacific Northwest, she came to understand the healing effects of nature and was drawn to teaching adults and children ecology in an outdoor setting. Combining her love of gardening and spirit of adventure, she started her first landscape design and build business, Superwonderful Garden Design. For the next 10 years, along with a small but mighty team, she created beautiful landscapes for residences and businesses. Feeling the itch to once again explore a new city, in 2015 she and her family transplanted to Austin, Texas where she joined Sustainable Food Center as the Teaching Garden Manager. For the next three and a half years, while creating a new public garden space in the middle of the city, she discovered the unique gardening challenges of Central Texas and taught youth and adults how to grow their own food. In 2019, she moved on from SFC to start Austin Edible Gardens to be able to work one-on-one with aspiring gardeners. When she is not designing edible gardens and teaching others how to grow food, she can be found mountain biking, volunteering in school gardens, and watching in wonder as seeds sprout into food-producing plants.
